The National Billiards League (NBL): The Much-Awaited Debut!

National Billiards League GraphicSome of my billiards buddies at the Makati Pool Players Association, D’Professional 9-Ball Club, Rackista, YoYo Billiards Club, Easy Pool Tutor Philippines, Filling Station Billiards Club, and Stiradors wanted to know more about the National Billiards League and its debut in Philippine sports entertainment. I have received countless emails and text messages requesting for more information on the development.

So, without further ado, here it is friends!

The National Billiards League

The green light is on for the Philippines’ first ever professional billiards league as the Billiards Managers and Players Association of the Philippines (BMPAP) and Solar Sports signed a memorandum of agreement to hold the National Billiards League (NBL) in late 2008! Aristeo Puyat of Puyat Sports, Perry Mariano of Bugsy Promotions, and Jonathan Sy of the Negros Billiard Stable signed the agreement with Solar Sports’ Chief Operating Officer Peter Chanliong and Vice President for Sales and Marketing Jude Turcuato.

Envisioned by Aristeo “Putch” Puyat, recognized by many as the Godfather of Philippine billiards, the NBL heralds a new era in billiards in the country. Putch Puyat sincerely believes that finding a broadcast partner in Solar Sports will fast track the realization of this endeavor, a dream shared by both pool players and managers.

But what exactly is the NBL? Friends, the NBL is the next big thing in Philippine sports entertainment! The league will gather the top Filipino pool players and group them into eight teams. These include Efren Bata Reyes, Francisco Django Bustamante, Rodolfo Luat, Ronnie Alcano, Alex Pagulayan, Dennis Orcollo, and more! And I kid you not!

But wait, there’s more! The NBL also aims to make billiards a real professional sport, in which the players, particularly the young ones, are given the chance to make a career out of the sport. Truth be told, a total of 48 players will have a regular source of income via the NBL - a dream come true for all! And how does it plan to do this? Via sponsorships, friends! These include most of the franchise owners in the Philippine Basketball Association, who have already made known their intentions to join the NBL’s debut!

To the National Billiards League, good luck on your maiden run! May you remain steadfast in your efforts of promoting the sport that we all love! Mabuhay!
